How SSY works
You deposit between ₹250 and ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years from opening the account. The account keeps earning interest until it matures 21 years after opening (no deposits needed in years 16–21). Like PPF, it's in the EEE category — deposits qualify for 80C, and both interest and maturity are tax-free.
Note: the interest rate (default 8.2%) is set by the government each quarter and may change over the 21-year life of the account, so the maturity value is an estimate at today's rate.
